La cáscara de huevo es un excelente abono orgánico

Es común que queramos disfrutar de unos deliciosos huevos, y al momento de prepararlos arrojemos la cáscara al cesto de la basura, ignorando que estas cuentan con un importante aporte de nutrientes, que son eficientemente aprovechados por las plantas. Son un excelente abono orgánico para el jardín, jardinera o huerto.

Nutrientes

Magnesio, potasio, sodio, fósforo, hierro y proteína en pequeñas cantidades son algunos de los nutrientes que contienen las cáscaras de huevo. Para emplearlas como abono orgánico, es importante triturarlas en pedazos pequeños, si es posible pulverizarlas mejor, para que se descompongan más rápido.

Beneficios y usos

La cáscara de huevo triturada, esparcida y previamente lavada (para este uso es importante que sea en trozos grandes y filosos) alrededor de las plantas ayuda a ahuyentar a los caracoles y babosas. Se crea una barrera, que estos animales la evitan para no incomodarse.

También es un fertilizante rico en calcio al revolverlo con la tierra o sustrato. Si procesamos otros desperdicios orgánicos junto con la cáscara de huevo, agua y una taza y media de vinagre, fabricaremos un compost con una extraordinaria dosis de calcio. Vale resaltar que no es muy común que las plantas tengan deficiencia de este mineral, pero su liberación en la tierra es bastante lenta. Utilizando la cáscara ayudamos a prevenir la podredumbre de plantas como tomates o rosas.

Para esas plantas que necesitan de un tipo de suelo específico para su crecimiento, las cáscaras contribuyen a reducir la acidez de la tierra. Si se desea lograrlo, es preciso que se agreguen durante un tiempo prolongado.

Otro uso, y uno de los más efectivos, es como complemento alimenticio de las gallinas. En ocasiones estas aves, sobre todo razas ponedoras, tienen deficiencia de calcio como consecuencia de la puesta de huevos y consumir las cáscaras les ayuda a reponerlo.

Planteado lo anterior, no es mala idea que en lugar de desechar la cáscara de huevo se reutilice como abono orgánico.
