Healing properties of lavender

La lavanda (nombre científico: Lavandula angustifolia) es una especie de planta de tallos leñosos, que tiene una altura de 50 a 80 centímetros. Es conocida por sus flowers de color violeta, agrupadas en forma de espigas, y su agradable olor. Pero más allá de su uso aromático, este arbusto tiene valiosas propiedades medicinales.

Digestivas

La lavanda tiene propiedades antiespasmódicas, es decir que es capaz de disminuir las contracciones gástricas e intestinales. También previene y favorece la expulsión de gases, calma las náuseas y vómitos, lo que la convierte en una aliada para regular el aparato digestivo. Es efectiva para aliviar el síndrome del intestino irritable y la indigestión. De hecho, se dice que durante la Primera Guerra Mundial era utilizada para inhibir el crecimiento de bacterias en el estómago.

Antiinflamatorias

Las propiedades antiinflamatorias son quizás de las más conocidas. La lavanda es muy utilizada para calmar el dolor muscular, así como también el tratamiento de heridas y quemaduras.

Los deportistas suelen utilizarla mucho para cuidar de sus piernas cansadas. Incluso es empleada en el tratamiento de enfermedades como la artritis. Su consumo es útil para tratar dolores de cabeza, musculares, tortícolis, lumbalgias, dolores de pies, entre otros.

Sedantes

La mencionada planta de flores violetas es muy útil en el tratamiento de trastornos del sueño y la ansiedad. Al ser sedante, ayuda a conciliar y mejorar la calidad del sueño. También ayuda a combatir y reducir los niveles de estrés. Muchas personas la consumen por medio de infusiones, aceites esenciales o cremas.

Un dato curioso. Investigadores japoneses afirman que oler una flor de lavanda durante 5 minutos al día tendría un efecto beneficioso sobre el estrés.  Esta acción ayudaría a disminuir el cortisol.

Otras propiedades

Vale destacar que la lavanda es un excelente cicatrizante. Además, calma los dolores menstruales y combate los síntomas del resfriado. Asimismo, sus propiedades antisépticas y astringentes ayudan a aliviar picaduras y eccemas.
