Eurosheep project seeks to increase sheep productivity

In order to create a European network for the exchange of knowledge on sheep and lamb health and nutrition to ensure the profitability of the sector, the Eurosheep Project was established in 2020. Eight countries participated in this project: Spain, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, United Kingdom and Turkey.

Previous stage

The project was organized around six issues:

  • Needs at the European Union level.
  • Set of best practices and solutions.
  • Key factors to meet the needs of livestock farmers.
  • Exchange of dissemination materials.
  • Acceptance by farmers.
  • Knowledge sharing and identification of research gaps.

48 hours ago, after more than three and a half years of work, the main results and conclusions of the investigations were presented at the headquarters of Neiker - Basque Institute for Agricultural Research and Developmentthe entity that coordinates the project at Spain.

Improve production

The initiative involved the participation of more than 1,200 agents from the sector, including livestock, veterinary, technical, research and academic personnel. In general terms, the contributions obtained contribute to increasing meat and/or milk production, as well as animal health and welfare. In addition, many of the proposals also have a positive impact on the environment.

In this sense, most of the selected solutions have been evaluated at a technical-economic, environmental and social level in order to be disseminated and adapted to different geographical and productive contexts.

Among the results presented was the compilation of more than 96 solutions: 47 on livestock health management and 49 on nutrition management. In addition, 52 tips and tricks were presented, which allow the best possible application of these solutions.

In conclusion, it is expected that the results of EuroSheep help to have more efficient farms, saving time and money, while being environmentally friendly.
