Trelew is a city located in the province of Chubut, Argentina, and is one of the towns that has been encouraged to promote agrotourism. Visitors can see how the fields are worked, learn about the production and harvesting sites, as well as be in contact with the animals.
The ranches
The success of the agrotourism activity in Trelew lies in the fact that tourists visit and share the day-to-day life of a chacra (small rural farm), learn how food is sown and harvested, see cows, rabbits, sheep and other animals up close and feed them.
Visitors can learn about the elaboration of artisanal products such as sweets, liqueurs, preserves, sausages and cheeses made from local raw materials. They can also taste the famous patagonian lamb known as the "jewel of the south" for its meat with very little fat and particular flavor.
In this sense, both the government and experts linked to the field are working to improve the capacities and competencies of producers in the organization and management of their enterprises as agrotourism service providers, including strengthening the supply of lodging.
The city's agricultural tradition dates back to colonial times, when the Welsh took advantage of the Chubut River to develop irrigation canals and increase food production.
