The Nearshoring or relocation of production is a strategy by which companies seek to bring production centers closer to their consumer markets. After the pandemic, this practice became even more attractive, as it has many advantages in the supply chain and minimizes transportation costs.
In this sense, Mexico has great potential for the arrival of foreign capital, not only because of its proximity to the United States, but also because it is part of a trade agreement involving the North American countries (T-MEC).
In relation to this, economists and experts on the subject affirm that the agro-industrial area will be one of those favored by the relocation., in addition to sectors such as automotive and manufacturing. Thanks to the proximity to serve the U.S. and Canadian markets, Mexican crops have great export potential.
Michoacán, leader in exports
At the beginning of 2023, the Mexican government announced that the state of Michoacán once again topped the national list of agricultural exports.
According to government reports, avocados, guavas, lemons, lime, and bananas are the most important berries (strawberries, blackberries and blueberries) are the main exports.
It is important to note that Michoacán is one of the two territories certified to export avocados to the United States. Jalisco is the Mexican state to achieve it, after obtaining the authorization in July 2022. During the more than 20 years that the "green gold" has been exported, production has tripled.
In the opinion of the Michoacán administration, it is taking advantage of the Nearshoring with the improvement of infrastructure, coordination with the "American Union", plus the professionalization and specialization of producers. With this approach they expect to improve exports to the United States and Canada. In addition, local authorities claim to be prepared for any type of entrepreneurship to be established in the state.
