Uruguay is preparing to commemorate International Food Loss and Waste Reduction Awareness Day on September 29th. To highlight the relevance of this issue and promote awareness, the Ministry of Environment (MA) has organized a week full of activities, from September 25 to 29, 2023, under the slogan "Uruguay More Circular".
Reducing food loss and waste (PDA)
The main objective of this week is to promote the reduction of food loss and waste, or FWL, raising awareness of the magnitude and importance of this phenomenon in social, environmental and financial terms. Reducing FWP contributes to ensuring food security and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, in line with global sustainability goals.
Activities agenda
Launching of the National PDA Prevention and Reduction Strategy. The week will begin on Monday, September 25 with the launching of the National Strategy for the Prevention and Reduction of PDA at the Executive Tower Annex Building. This face-to-face event, which will take place from 2 to 3:30 p.m., will present the contents of the National Strategy and the current lines of work. It is important to point out that spaces are limited and registration closes on september 21.
Discussion on the Regulation of the Food Donation Law. On the same day, from 4 to 6 p.m., a discussion will be held at the same venue on the perspectives for the regulation of the Food Donation Law (Law No. 20,177). This event is also face-to-face and has limited spaces. Enrollment is open until September 21 here.
Waste management in gastronomy and retail trade. On Tuesday, September 26, at the National Chamber of Commerce and Services of Uruguay, there will be a discussion on the reduction of food waste in gastronomy and retail trade (see the following link).retail). This face-to-face event aims to raise awareness of the challenges and opportunities in waste prevention in these key sectors. Registration is open until September 25.
PDA Recovery and Circularity Strategies. On Wednesday, September 27, there will be a virtual event focused on the strategies for recovery, distribution and circularity of food losses and waste carried out by the departmental intendancies. This activity seeks to highlight initiatives at the local level. Registration is available here.
International PDA Reduction Awareness Day
The week will culminate on September 29th with the International Food Loss and Waste Reduction Awareness Day at a high-level virtual event organized by FAO/IDB. This event will bring together diverse voices from the region to drive a message of unity in transforming food systems towards a more sustainable and resilient future.
